Farm News

Our chickens are raised outdoors on green pasture where they feast on
green grass, herbs, forbes and the bugs that the love to dig and scratch
for. The supplemental grain our chickens receive is grown and milled fresh
by a local farmer who farms using organic practices.
And of course our
chickens are never de-beaked and never receive anti-biotics.

Broilers: When they are old enough to leave the brooder, our broilers (meat chickens) live in movable pens that give them shelter from the elements and protection from predators. The pens are moved daily so they always have access to green feed, and as a side benefit our fields receive a healthy dose of fertilizer - we often refer to the pens as our manure spreaders!

Layers: Young layers grow up in the movable pens with the broilers, and  some of them are raised by our broody hens. When they are adults they join our laying flock that roams around the farm foraging in the woods, grazing on pasture and taking dustbaths in the barnyard.

Food that tastes fabulous and is good for you: This healthy outdoor life with a varied diet, fresh air, sunshine and exercise means healthy, happy chickens that produce nutritious and delicious meat and eggs.

A recent study funded by the USDA Sustainable Agriculture and Research Education Program (SARE) showed that meat from pastured chickens had 21% less total fat, 30% less saturated fat, 28% fewer calories, 50% more vitamin A and 100% more omega-3 fatty acids in their meat. The same SARE study compared eggs from caged birds with those from pastured poultry. The eggs from the pastured birds had 10% less fat, 40% more vitamin A, 400% more omega-3s and 34% less cholesterol.

Availability: Eggs area available year round. Fresh chicken is available in the spring and fall, frozen chicken is available year round although we sometimes run out of the more popular items by late winter/early spring. Stewing birds are generally available in the fall and winter.

Product and Price List
Prices are subject to change (of course!) and are for items picked up at the farm. Market prices for some items are higher to cover the time and other costs of selling at an off-farm farm market.

We only raise chickens when there is plenty of green grass and the
weather is warm enough for them to live happily outdoors, so fresh chicken is available from May until October and the rest of the year we usually have frozen chicken available. Our whole chickens are priced to encourage you to buy them fresh and in quantity! You can stock up your freezer and we have less to freeze, store and take to markets. It works for us and we hope if works for you too.
